Profile of the Day: Buster Keaton

Buster Keaton

On this day in 1895, iconic silent film star Buster Keaton was born in Piqua, Kansas.

Joseph Frank Keaton, VI was the son of Joseph Hallie “Joe” Keaton and Myra Cutler. Born into a vaudeville family, Keaton was destined to follow in his family’s footsteps. By the age of three, his parents had incorporated him into their vaudeville act. His father once worked in a traveling medicine show with Harry Houdini. According to some stories, it was Houdini who gave Keaton the nickname “Buster” after he fell down a flight of stairs. After Keaton sat up uninjured from the fall, Houdini is said to have exclaimed, “That was a real buster!”

Keaton gained fame for his highly popular comedies during the silent film era. He got big laughs for his physical comedy while sporting his signature stoic, deadpan expression. He would be remembered as one of the greatest stars of the era.
