Hubble was born to Virginia Lee James and John Powell Hubble on November 20, 1889. Growing up, he was known for his athletic abilities and participated in a number of sports, including baseball, football, basketball, and track.

In 1919, Hubble began working at Mount Wilson Observatory, California with the Hooker Telescope, then the largest telescope in the world. After observing what was thought to be nebulae, clouds of dust and gas, he was able to prove conclusively that those nebulae were too far to be a part of the Milky Way, and were in fact, entire galaxies outside our own. He would later be the first to observe that the universe was expanding at a constant rate.

Hubble’s discoveries fundamentally transformed the scientific community’s understanding of the universe. As a tribute to the pioneering astronomer, the Hubble Space Telescope was named in his honor.
