Profile of the Day: James VI and I

James VI and I

On this day in 1625, King James VI and I died at the age of 58. Crowned the King of Scotland at thirteen months old, James’s reign in Scotland lasted for 57 years and 246 days, longer than any of his predecessors.

James was born on June 19, 1566 and was the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. His mother’s reign was plagued in scandal. On May 15, 1567, his father was murdered. Only a few months after his death, Mary married James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, who was widely suspected of committing the crime. By June 1567, Protestant rebels arrested Mary and imprisoned her in Loch Leven Castle. Mary was forced to abdicate and James was crowned king in July 1567.

He ruled as James VI, King of Scotland and and in 1603, he succeeded Elizabeth I and ruled as James I, King of Great Britain and Ireland. He ruled both kingdoms until his death on March 27, 1625. He was succeeded by his second son, Charles I.
