Janis Joplin

On January 19, 1943, American singer and songwriter Janis Joplin was born in Port Arthur, Texas. Known for her powerful and original voice, Joplin rose to fame in the late 1960s as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company and later as a solo artist. Some of her greatest hits include, “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Mercedes Benz” and “Try (Just a Little Bit Harder).” Sadly, Joplin’s life was cut short after succumbing to an accidental drug overdose at the age of 27. In 1995, Joplin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She also received a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
