Henson was born on September 24, 1936 in Greenville, Mississippi to Paul Ransom Henson and Betty Brown. He had a close relationship with his maternal grandmother, who was an avid painter, quilter, and needleworker. She encouraged Henson’s artistic passions and creativity.
Henson rose to stardom after showcasing his Muppet creations on the popular 1970’s children’s show, Sesame Street. During his time on the show, he helped create many of the show’s iconic characters including Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Oscar the Grouch. In 1976, Henson launched The Muppet Show and introduced the world to Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and many more. The hit show would spin off several feature films and television specials.
Even after Henson’s passing in 1990, the Muppets continue to have a presence on the big and small screens. Did you watch The Muppet Show? Who was your favorite character?
