Profile of the Day: Mary Shelley

Mary Shelley

Have you read the story of Frankenstein? On this day in 1797, author Mary Shelley was born.

She was born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin on August 30, 1797 in London, England. She was the daughter of philosopher and novelist William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, a writer and women’s rights advocate. Shortly after her birth, Shelley’s mother died, leaving her father to raise her and her older half sister, Fanny Imlay. At the age of 16, she met and married poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, despite the fact that he was already married.

Shelley began writing Frankenstein at the age of 18. The Gothic novel is considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction. It was first published anonymously in 1818. Her name did not appear on the novel until five years later in 1823. To this day, her novel is still widely read and has inspired many film and theatrical adaptations.
