He was born Prince Rogers Nelson to John Lewis Nelson, a jazz musician, and Mattie Della Shaw. He was named after his father, who used the stage name Prince Rogers when performing. Throughout his life, Prince’s father was a significant influence on his music. He wrote his first song at his father’s piano at the age of 7 and was encouraged to pursue his interest in music.

Over the course of his career, Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, earning him a place as one of the best selling artists of all time. His album, Purple Rain, continues to be ranked as one of the best albums in music history.

Sadly, Prince died on April 21, 2016 at the age of 57.
