Tove Marika Jansson was born in Helsinki, Finland on August 9, 1914 to Viktor Jansson, a sculptor, and Signe Hammarsten-Jansson, a graphic designer and illustrator. The family belonged to the Swedish-speaking minority of Finland.

Best known as the author of the Moomin children’s books and cartoons, Jansson is perhaps one of the most read Finnish authors abroad. Her work has been translated into over 40 languages. In 1966, she received the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for her contributions to children’s literature.

Not only did Jansson write children’s books, she also found success writing novels for adult audiences and with her work as a painter and illustrator.
