Profile of the Day: Walter Raleigh
On October 29, 1618, English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh was executed to appease Spain after he and his men ransacked a Spanish outpost while on an expedition in search of El Dorado. Once considered one of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era, Raleigh was instrumental in the English colonization of North America. He was granted a royal patent to explore Virignia and attempted to establish a colony at Roanoke Island. Although the colony was not successful, it paved the way for future English settlements.
