Update on the Tree Display Bug

Posted August 23, 2011 by Geni | 13 Comments

Beginning earlier this month, a portion of Geni users have been noticing the names in their tree displaying vertically. As soon as we started receiving reports of this issue, our engineers began investigating why some users were seeing this bug while others weren’t. As it turns out, this is a problem in the latest version of Adobe Flash.

We’ve been working with the folks at Adobe, and they intend to release a fix for this issue sometime this week. If you follow this blog, our Twitter account, or our Facebook account, you’ll know as soon as the fix is available.

We know that this bug is annoying, but rest assured that our engineering team is working deeply with Adobe to ensure that this is fixed as soon as possible.

I also have a problem with resizing profile pictures (in the tree view). After a few seconds they ‘jump’ back to the size or place before the editing. Is this also due to the latest version of Flash?

Can you give me some information to forward along to our engineers so they can look into this?

      1) Does this happen every time or intermittently?

      2) What browser are you using?

      3) Are both your browser and flash up to date?

If you can answer those, we will be able to pinpoint the issue quicker.

This happens every time. Since a week or 2… I use Safari but it also happens when using Firefox. Running OS X Lion.  software up to date … according to my Mac ;-)

This bug also affects me, and I thought it affects everyone. Someone at Geni staff wrote somewhere that this bug was known after the complete data restore in early August.

For me it happens every time (the past two weeks approximately) in Google Chrome 13.0.782.112, Mozilla Firefox 6.0 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 (i.e. all browsers I have tried). My Geni Flash version is 0812a, Adobe Flash Player (in all three browsers).

Thanks Grant for investigating.  It also happens with fully up to date Chrome.

Your should rewrite it for HTML5 !!!

I only have the problem with Firefox, using internet explorer is my temp. fix.

A user posted a temporary fix for this a few days ago on the GENI website.   Unfortunately the geni site is awful with regard to user-to-user communication, so I’m sure very few people saw it.

Anyway, this is the only way I’ve been able to stand using geni these past few days:

A temporary workaround is to resize the tree display using the zoom slider thingy on the left hand side. This is for those not brave enough to download a beta Flash 11 update.

I noticed it right after the Big Crash, and kinda was waiting for it to go away.  Now I know that because of Chrome’s auto updating, that’s what’s going on.  It’s been annoying, but not a show stopper.  Simply mousing over things sets it right for a few seconds.  Annoying, but I can wait for Adobe (in theory)

I agree with David — why is a web app even using Flash for this in 2011?

I just uploaded the latest Flash Player update(not Beta)  and it appears to have solved that problem. However, now a lot of the names are cut off since it tries to display them on one line instead of two. Again, hitting the ctrl button corrects it until you leave and come back.

It is annoying and I hope that it will be fixed soon
