He was the only son and fifth child born to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. Through his maternal grandmother, Philip is a direct descendant of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Queen-Victoria-of-the-United-Kingdom\/6000000008852088113\" target=\"_blank\">Queen Victoria<\/a>, who is\u00a0his second great grandmother.\u00a0As an infant, his family was banished from Greece after his uncle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Konstant\u00ednos-I-King-of-the-Greeks\/6000000001846817008\" target=\"_blank\">King Constantine I of Greece<\/a>, was forced to abdicate the throne.<\/p>\n<p>In 1947, Philip married\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Elizabeth-II-Queen-of-the-United-Kingdom\/6000000003075071669\" target=\"_blank\">Princess Elizabeth<\/a>\u00a0in Westminster Abbey. The wedding was broadcasted on the radio to over 200 million people around the world. Elizabeth would ascended to the throne a few years later in 1952 after the death of her father, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/George-VI-King-of-the-United-Kingdom\/6000000001217955606\" target=\"_blank\">King George VI<\/a>. In 2017, Philip retired from his royal duties.
