He was the first of five\u00a0children born to Samuel Ealy Johnson, Jr., a farmer and state legislator, and Rebekah Baines. His father\u00a0would severe five terms in the Texas House of Representatives after succeeding Johnson&#8217;s\u00a0maternal grandfather,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Joseph-Wilson-Baines\/6000000002704341185\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Wilson Baines<\/a>, in 1905. With family serving in public office, it was of no surprise that Johnson would also enter the world of politics.<\/p>\n<p>In 1960, Johnson\u00a0entered the office of the Vice President of the United States.\u00a0Three years later on November 22, 1963, he\u00a0would be sworn in as the 36th President of the United States on board Air Force One after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas.
