On this day in 1814, Irish horror writer Sheridan Le Fanu<\/a> was born.\u00a0Considered to be the leading ghost story writer of the 19th century, Le Fanu’s works played a significant role in shaping the genre\u00a0during the Victorian era.<\/p>\n

Le Fanu was born Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu on August 28, 1814 in Dublin, Ireland. He was born into a literary family with many writers and playwrights, including\u00a0his great uncle, Richard Brinsley Sheridan<\/a>, who is buried\u00a0in the Poets’ Corner\u00a0of Westminster Abbey.<\/p>\n

After abandoning his law studies, Le Fanu turned to journalism and began writing ghost stories for the\u00a0Dublin University Magazine<\/em>. In 1880, he published\u00a0The Purcell Papers<\/em>, a\u00a0collection of his Gothic and horror stories\u00a0in three volumes. He would publish several more novels, including\u00a0Uncle Silas<\/em>, The House by the Churchyard<\/i>, and\u00a0Carmilla<\/em>. His work would go on to influence several writers, including\u00a0Dracula\u00a0<\/em>author Bram Stoker<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Le Fanu died on February 7, 1873 at the age of 58.<\/p>\n
