He was the only son of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Mary, Queen of Scots (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Mary-I-Queen-of-Scots\/6000000003234018546\" target=\"_blank\">Mary, Queen of Scots<\/a>, and her second husband, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Henry-Stewart-Lord-Darnley\/6000000003876051113\" target=\"_blank\">Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley<\/a>. His mother&#8217;s unpopular reign was plagued by scandal. In February 1567, his father was murdered. A few short months later, his mother married <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Sir-James-Hepburn-1st-Last-Duke-of-Orkney\/6000000001723257706\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell (opens in a new tab)\">James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell<\/a>, who was widely suspected of killing her husband. By July, Mary was forced to abdicate her throne in favor of her infant son and he was crowned James VI of Scotland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1603, James succeeded <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Elizabeth I (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Elizabeth-I-of-England\/4476035\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth I<\/a> and ruled as James I, King of Great Britain and Ireland. He would rule both kingdoms until his death on March 27, 1625 at the age of 58.
