Kelly (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/John-Kelly-Sr\/6000000004015763383\" target=\"_blank\">John B. Kelly<\/a>, a three-time Olympic gold medalist for sculling, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Margaret-Kelly\/6000000000652481073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Margaret Katherine Majer (opens in a new tab)\">Margaret Katherine Majer<\/a>, a physical education teacher and first coach of women&#8217;s teams at the University of Pennsylvania. Despite her parents&#8217; disapproval, Kelly dreamed of becoming an actor from a young age. She wasn&#8217;t the first in her family to pursue a career entertainment. Her uncle, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Walter C. Kelly (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Walter-Kelly\/4753613936050029432\" target=\"_blank\">Walter C. Kelly<\/a>, was a vaudeville actor and comedian, and her uncle, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"George Kelly (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/George-Kelly\/6000000022421899523\" target=\"_blank\">George Kelly<\/a>, was a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, director, and actor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the 1950s, Kelly was one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. Her performance in the 1954 film <em>The Country Girl<\/em> earned her an Oscar for Best Actress. She also memorably starred in three <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Alfred Hitchcock (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Alfred-Hitchcock\/6000000000115416611\" target=\"_blank\">Alfred Hitchcock<\/a> thrillers: <em>Dial M for Murder<\/em>, <em>Rear Window<\/em>, and <em>To Catch a Thief<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1956, Kelly married Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, in a lavish ceremony. Although she was at the height of her career, Kelly retired from acting after her marriage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly suffered a stroke on September 13, 1982 while driving, causing her to lose control of the vehicle and drive off a steep cliff. Her daughter, St\u00e9phanie, was a passenger in the car and suffered minor injuries.
