{"id":14171,"date":"2010-12-17T13:21:08","date_gmt":"2010-12-17T20:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geni.com\/blog\/?p=14171"},"modified":"2011-07-19T17:00:59","modified_gmt":"2011-07-20T00:00:59","slug":"translating-websites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/blog\/translating-websites-14171.html","title":{"rendered":"Translating Websites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Note: This short post is a cross-post from the <a href=\"http:\/\/eng.geni.com\/\">Geni Engineering blog<\/a>. \u00a0The topic is less relevant to genealogy and Geni users, but we wanted to share because we know a lot of you are tech enthusiasts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tr8n.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"tr8n\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tr8n.org\/tr8n\/images\/tr8n_logo2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"164\" \/><\/a>We <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geni.com\/blog\/twenty-languages-one-tree\/\">released our translation features<\/a> six months ago and quickly saw our community translate Geni into 20 different languages. \u00a0 Since then, Geni has been translated into 70 different languages with over 150,000 translations. \u00a0It has been amazing to watch the community work towards the goal of making Geni accessible to everybody.<\/p>\n<p>Today we <a href=\"http:\/\/eng.geni.com\/2010\/12\/17\/solving-the-problem-of-internationalization\/\">introduced our translation service<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tr8n.org\/\">tr8n<\/a>, to the open source community.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;When we decided to translate Geni into other languages, we looked at a number of options, including hiring professional translators and using Facebook&#8217;s translation tools. We quickly realized that there weren&#8217;t any great options out there,&#8221; said Noah Tutak, President of Geni. &#8220;When we discovered that one of our engineers, Michael Berkovich, is fluent in both a Slavic language and a language written right-to-left, we knew we had the in-house expertise to build our own solution.
