The U.S. National Archives has released the 1940 census images online for free. These records contain information for over 132 million U.S. citizens and hold a plethora of genealogical treasures. You will need to have some idea of where your ancestor was living at the time to search the images.\u00a0A large group of volunteers have already started helping to get the name-index ready.
