Two days later on July 4, its delegates adopted the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geni.com\/projects\/Signers-of-the-Declaration-of-Independence-Colonial-America-in-1776-Project\/10\">Declaration of Independence<\/a>,\u00a0drafted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Thomas-Jefferson-3rd-President-of-the-United-States-of-America\/6000000003849466047\">Thomas Jefferson<\/a>, and\u00a0declared the 13 American colonies independent states and no longer a part of the British Empire.
