<\/a>The mugshot was invented by Alphonse Bertillon, a French police officer and biometrics researcher. He applied the anthropological technique of anthropometry to law enforcement, creating an identification system based on measurements. Although photographing criminals began shortly after the invention of photography, it wasn’t until 1888 that Bertillon attempted to standardized the process. This system was used for years until fingerprinting replaced it.<\/p>\nThe style of mugshots vary depending on the location and precinct. However, many early mugshot records can potentially hold lots\u00a0of information that could be very useful in your genealogy research, including:<\/p>\n

- Picture<\/li>\n
- Name<\/li>\n
- Alias<\/li>\n
- Age<\/li>\n
- Occupation<\/li>\n
- Physical description (height, weight, hair and eye color, distinguishing features, etc.)<\/li>\n
- Crime<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
