Born on October 30, 1945 in Manhattan, New York, Winkler is the son of Ilse Anna Maria and Harry Irving Winkler, a lumbar company president. His parents were Jewish and emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1939 on the eve of World War II. Winkler discovered a\u00a0love for\u00a0performing at an early age. A classically trained actor, he earned his MFA from the Yale School of Drama in 1967.<\/p>\n

In 1973, he got his big break when he was cast in the role of Arthur “Fonzie”\u00a0Fonzarelli on the\u00a0television series Happy Days<\/em>. The show was a huge\u00a0hit and Winkler’s character soon became the star of the show. Since Happy Days, <\/em>Winkler has continued to work steadily as an actor and director. In 2018, Winkler won his first Emmy for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the HBO comedy,\u00a0Barry<\/em>. He received a second nomination for the role this year, but lost to Tony Shalhoub.<\/p>\n
