Thomas "Tom" Frederick Allen recommended this book in another discussion and I have to stop myself from ordering it right now.
Here's the Amazon page
Thank you, Tom. I've joined you as a collaborator to this Project.
I know you will enjoy it. I was fascinated by the facts and stories that are related in the book. I also did not realize how many relatives I had that were involved in the trials, from judges to victims. Ann Putnam, who was one of the main conspirators in the whole mess was my second cousin.
Why would you make a urine cake?????
I am related to the Ipswitch witches! I had no idea until a few weeks ago.
It was all political. My ancestresses were accused because their husbands were independent thinkers and sassed the Puritan ministers some years earlier. But now these women were widows without the same protection. One grandmother was thrown in jail, soon to be joined by her daughter ... And 15 year old grand daughter.
@ Leona Scott: Rebecca Towne has also been listed as an ancestor of mine on my mother's side. She was the first witch to be executed & found guilty. I am also related to Sarah Towne Cloyce wo was not indicted by the grand jury. Therefore, @ Robert Stanley Martin, I am most likely related to you as well, as the two witches that were twins and the first to be executed Rebecca Towne Nurse & Sarah Towne Cloyce were descendants of my mother!
On my grandmother's side, I am also descended from Giles Corey. I was thrilled to find that out. My ancestor, Benjamin Barney married Abigail Corey, his granddaughter. He was accused of witchcraft, but denied it to the end and had the punishment of stones piled on him til death. I am proud of him and his spirit.
@Linda Donahue I am Robert's wife Patricia Callanan, I do his lineage. This Membership is in his name, I didn't want to have to purchase two memberships to have both of our trees.
My Sister Kathleen Callanan does our side under her name.
It is We, Kathleen and Patricia, NOT Robert who is directly related to the Townes and YES we would be related.
So nice to meet you.
@ Patricia & Kathleen Callanan: I guess we must be cousins or something as I was related on my mother's side to the Towne's. The 1st two witches that were executed, Rebecca Nurse & Sarah Towne Cloyce were here long distant cousins. it obviously was many moons ago in 1620. It happened @ Gallows Hill in Salem, and I live rt. near Salem in Beverly, Mass. I've been rt. where the burials were @ Gallows Hill or Winter Hill as it is also called as well as Pioneer Village in Salem. Now you have to be a resident of Salem to go there. My sister used to live in Salem, so I could get in w/her & the kids when they were small. They're all teenagers now. My nephew Corey is in the Navy and has been since he grad. from H.S. 4 yrs. ago! My mom's been gone since 1972. She died @ the young age of only 52 and her mother was only 42 when she died. My mother had a heart attack!
