Batesville, Utah: Bates Creek originates at Lowe Peak on the southwest slopes of the Oquirrh Mountains and drains southwest into Rush Valley. In 1850 Ormus E Bates and his family settled at the mouth what is presently Ophir Canyon. The settlement was known for a time as Knowllen or Nowlenville. Eventually assumed the Bates family name of Batesville. In 1852-53 the people built a fort for protection and named it Rose Springs Fort. The settlement lasted until 1873.
