US Immigration records disclose Dad sailed to Seattle in 1937 aboard the "Heian Maru". There was also a nearly identical sister ship, the "Hikawa Maru" on which Aunt Haru and Bobby sailed as well as Uncle Yutaka on a later voyage.

I was curious to hear the fate of these ships. Unfortunately, my dad's "Heian Maru" was a casualty of the war having been sunk in Truk Lagoon, Dublon Island in 1944. She is the largest wreck there. Ironically, the Heian Maru was converted to a sub tender while her sister ship, the Hikawa Maru, was converted to a hospital ship and survived the war.

In another twist of fate and although he did not serve during war time, the work of my father's US Army unit, the secret Military Intelligence Service, led to the tremendous lopsided victory at Truk Lagoon.
