MARY SKRYPNYK December 11, 1915 - June 27, 2012 Journalist and translator: Maxim Gorky Prize, Ivan Franko Prize, former co-editor, Ukrainian Canadian Magazine. Mary had an interesting life: she trained to be a pilot and parachutist, hoping to contribute in the Spanish Civil War. She met Dr. Norman Bethune. Later, at an international socialists womens' conference in Cuba, she met Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. She loved opera, ballet and theatre. Mary did not marry. She had good friendships. She lived for many years in Roncesvalles, a neighbourhood which she loved and continued to walk well into her nineties. Her siblings Ann, Alec and Nick predeceased her. She is survived by nieces and nephews: Dr Alix Young (Roger), Paul Hutchinson (Patricia), Larry Skrypnyk, Judy Eagles (Don) and by their children and grandchildren. Private service.
