Kia Ora,
Hohipaea is my 3rd Great Grandmother.
Last year I made contact with Lesley McLean from the Whakatohea Tribal Database.
She confirmed that Matarena was not Hohipaea's mother.
She was kind enough to send me a copy of a Land Claim Hohipaea had lodged on April 1, 1867, for her lands in Opotiki, through her mother.
In the notes she named her ancestors as Patu Makarini, Hinenena, Kaka and Puata.
This and other references in the notes, have led me to believe that Puata is her mother.
She also states her father is Tuterangikawhia (probable mis-spelling).
I hope this helps
Hi,
Hohipaea is my husband's [maternal] 2nd Gt Grandmother. A few years ago, we made contact with Ken Read, whose wife is also a descendant of Hohipaea.
He was very helpful in filling in missing details from our family tree.
He has compiled a very extensive family tree and has a huge amount of knowledge of the history of Sophia's struggles with land claims.
My understanding is that he has helped the Whakatohea Tribal Database hugely, to compile her history, in order for them to pursue settlement claims with the Government.
Kia ora Sophia it's kanarahi kohiti once again I just like to confirm that my grandmother's name is makarina houdson nee ngapuhi and I live in rotorua my grandmother's first husband was Joe hatata she then married a bill houdson she has passed for many many years and is buried in tewhaiti in waikotokoti
