The criteria for this project reads:

"Please feel free to contribute additional geni members who are genealogy specialists with websites, or blogs to this project."

But what about our "in house" talent on Geni? Those we have learned are the "go to" people for particular historical or genealogical topics?
Should we create a companion project so geni members can learn who to tag in a discussion?

I was thinking the criteria should be "by recommendation.". In other words, If I've had positive results consulting with a Geni member, I should (with their permission) add their Geni user name to the project front page.

Thoughts?

Define those who are Genealogy Specialists, please?

Are we talking about people how are taking special interest in different areas, or are we talking about actual academics, active on Geni?

Geni members, "real life" credentials irrelevant (although they certainly can be noted).

Thanks for creating this project! I'm echoing Erica Howton's question re. our "in-house" talent with "real life" credentials. How about this for a companion project: a translation page (I can't offer more about format), in which people expert at various languages could help researchers who run into language snags? People could provide links or even text (length limit?) for which they would like translations. Prospective translators should provide blurbs and ideally samples or references.

Erica dont we have a project for research help?

Well I'll be! How come I had forgotten about the "research volunteers" project???

And this one

http://www.geni.com/projects/Geni-translators/223

Would / should it be expanded to including actual translating?

And we need some more organizing in finding ourselves, it looks like. :):)

Maybe the problem with "research volunteers" is it doesn't have genealogy in the project name, and a re name would help it?

Yep maybe with some minor changes and additions the research volunteer project will do :)

What about consolidating research volunteers into Genealogy specialists?

Maybe create a discussion in the discussion section of Geni research volunteers and we can check with the collaborators of the project ?

Much better now, Erica Howton!

I think I could add a related project:

http://www.geni.com/projects/Dutch-Wood-for-the-Trees/26101

Because I know my way around, working with the Dutch archives from Familysearch, you could call me an expert? In that sense that I should be part of the project page?

Yes, of course, Dimitri. The scope of the project http://www.geni.com/projects/Geni-research-volunteers/9996

Reads:

If you have research interests and abilities and like helping others on Geni, this is the project for you.

So certainly add yourself in the list at the bottom & relate the Dutch Wood project.

===

What I'm thinking is this:

"Another sister project is Genealogy Specialists on Geni."

I am thinking it would be more useful to consolidate the two projects and organize it by section:

- Those with external sites / publications / etc. That listing is nominated / vetted.

- Those who have listed themselves & their areas; we could add other members to the list on their behalf but only with their permission.

====

I actually am thinking about two members I am aware of, one for each category!

Oh - and I think "genealogy specialist" is the better project title.

Malka Mysels do you have an opinion? Is it better to keep them separate?

Erica Howton Combining these two projects might confuse members seeking assistance with their research.

While Geni Research Volunteers help provide collaborative services,
The Genealogy Specialists are not listed as volunteers, but rather as potential consultants, though some experts fit both project parameters.

But, we could add a live link to the "Research Volunteers Project" within the Specialists project to draw attention to the relationship and connection between the two.

I see - "specialists" are offering outside services (perhaps). I think I was confused by the deceased DL Jacobus being the "top profile."

Yes, can something be added at the top of the project directing to Research (peer) volunteers?

Also i think the title of the project "Research volunteers" needs to be adjusted to something with "genealogy" in it ....

Erica Howton Absolutely right, outside services, or excellent reliable "genealogy sources" to consult, hence DL Jacobus's listing.

It's time to DEVELOP the current projects instead of continuing creating more (often duplicate) projects.

More like the way U.S. Government does business i.e. create more programs and over time create more confusion, inefficiency to point NO progress is made....the programs added become superfluous at best serving only the narrow agenda of those who originally sponsored them.

just my opinion

Ailene Nechelle House, it would be helpful to come up with naming those similar projects and argument why they are duplicating each other. Then it would be possible to make necessary adjustments, if needed.

Ailene Nechelle House You are right that current projects should not be overlooked. However, project variety stimulates the creative process and increased project numbers help capture the interest in genealogy via ubiquitous "Google Searches" of people who would never otherwise have logged onto a genealogy site.

From personal experience, I have seen some get hooked this way, and have heard from students who have come across projects accidentally and to their delight learnt about the families, historical context and intimate details of the lives of individuals which ignited their interest in family trees.

Within the site itself, the Projects search box helps geni members navigate categories they are researching, and no two projects are exactly alike, each brings new information, spirit and vitality to the subject.

Malka - Jacobus is deceased and no longer offering genealogical services. :)

Yes, Allene, agree. That's why I posted first before making a new project. Power of collaboration is (close) to solving it parsimoniously, as it turns out we have existing projects that could work on both the "translation services" and "genealogy services" we're discussing.

Private User we had chatted a bit about this, I wonder if you could come take a look at the projects.

Erica Howton The project lists specialists on Geni in order to recognize their prominence and contribution to a particular field, and help direct users to their seminal work. So it matters not when an expert has passed on.

Erica Howton However you may have a good point that DL Jacobus should no longer top the list.

Erika the @ won't work so I would say go for this project I am supporting you 100%
There are a difference between research and research from the chair.
The latter more than likely to be fond incorrect once someone has gone to do research.
Thank you for this.
Judi
NB. Hope it came out correct. Remember my mother tongue is Afrikaans.☺

Dimitri Gazan you can surely be of great help to me, and I admit it, setting up projects. I can go and do research and have actively done that in the archive but setting up a project to work with others- that is a battle.☺
Judi
Erica Howton now it works.
Judi

Judi - excellent point about the word "researcher" actually, it does imply someone who goes to archives, compared to a compiler (or genealogist for that matter).

It does get tricky!

Erica Howton I can add at least two Geni users who do Archival as well as on line research for the Geni users. The one unfortunately don't do it for free and the other one does. He is also an IT fundi but that I would rather give to you in private.
In SA we don't have many blogs and websites as it is very expensive.
Judi

Well, let's see how the projects evolve in scope & naming, and take it from there. I'm not one of these project creators, so hope for more feedback from those who are - and others - before making changes.

LOL
