Geni Special Collections could be a perfect umbrella for developing "special topic" DNA projects, particularly now that DNALand offers a link back to Geni profiles. (see http://blog.kittycooper.com/2016/02/dna-land-new-features-geni-conn...)

Sharon - I was thinking of the interesting project using paper trail + DNA test results to identify a maternal progenitor. Would that be of interest as a proposed Geni SC? Would you add to the "proposed" list / related projects?

I'm going to propose the South Irish DNA project we have in progress.

That's an interesting idea - you mean like these ones:

*South African mtDNA Progenitors:

*DNA Mapping of the Slave Routes to Southern Africa: http://www.geni.com/projects/DNA-Mapping-of-the-Slave-Routes-to-Sou...

*Bothas who are DNA Descendants of Ferdinandus Appel

*South Africa - Founders Effect:

Yes, exactly.

I think we'll need to break out into "topic areas" - see Morel's proposal:

slightly aside Sharon Lee Doubell I found a baptism record of a 16 year old Negro named George Wilson in London 1802, do you have somewhere I can put him?

Said he was born in Africa

Does it give his parents?

No parents but in Christ Church Surrey, I am studying the Wilsons there, very amazing family, Harriet Wilson was a coutesan to George 4th.

John James Dubochet

Here is Harriett - The woman who Blackmailed the king (but he owed her the money in my book, as they spoiled her from age 15.

and here is her obituary in South Australia.

She moved to Paris for a bit, and as I have a "very dark" great grandfather Pierre Wilson La France I keep looking for Wilsons. He did speak french tho.

Look at John James (changed his name to Wilson in 1801) Profile as they might also be the Wilsons who deserted the "Willson Party" to South Africa. May even have come here (Kangaroo Island), following thru with checking that.

So, you don't have the baptism doc for George?

Yes I did a screen clip but no parents on the document.

Africa is a big place - without knowing where in Africa, or if he was a slave; or a mixed race Wilson child - it's hard to find a project to attach him to.

I LOVE the founder effect project for SA! I`d like to create founder effect projects for several other locations, ones that come to mind readily are Quebec and Costa Rica, plus there are several US States that can also be included.

I also think that surnames + DNA can be powerful projects too.

I think that special collections can 1) attract new people to Geni, 2) keep current Geni users engaged and 3) create new knowledge.

Creating new knowledge can engage the genealogy thought leaders and get them to use Geni and to promote Geni.
