I have scanned and added 13 pages of Houston family articles that appeared in the Mecklinburg, VA, newspaper c1955, together with various obituaries that appeared in that paper at various times. I am not sure how or where to attach this so others might access it.

These clippings were gathered by my mother-in-law, Mrs. Martine (Phifer) Oakley Cox, granddaughter of Florence Houston.

How wonderful!

These help screens should assist in utilizing the documents

PS I often -

- rename a document to make it easier to know what it's about at a glance
- use the document "description" box for an attribution
- tag a document to multiple profiles
- cite the facts it supports for the profile

Can get a lot of mileage out of one newspaper clipping!

Documents added to public profiles are public by default. You have access through our collaboration to many public profiles.

My fifth great grandmother was a Houston: Margaret Mayes Houston. Samuel John Houston is my 7th great grandfather. Sam Houston, President of Texas, is a second cousin.

My Cunningham family settled in Augusta County, Virginia. I don't know a link to the Margaret Cunningham in this tree, but I believe it's there to be found one day. Meanwhile, proud to be a more distant cousin.

Erica, sorry but I have no info of the Scots/Irish Margaret Cunningham Houston. Hugh Houston of Craigs Castle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, was married to Margaret Shaw Houston, who was the daughter of Sir James and Lady Isabella Shaw. The Shaws in Ireland built Ballyrally Castle on Ballyrally Bay, not far from the Houston estate (the king began granting lands in Northern Ireland to Scottish nobles in 1606). Hugh and Margaret had Samuel John Houston, who married Margaret McClug Houston. That Margaret was the widowed mom of our John Houston and together with John's wife (Margaret Cunningham Houston) and their 6 kids came to America in 1735. The Houston Castle near Paisley in Scotland was torn down c.1740, and likewise the Houston's Craigs Castle in Northern Ireland was destroyed (probably during the Irish Civil Wars), but Ballyrally Castle survives and is a 4-star hotel! Google it.
