I'd like to have more info before we take action either way. I remember when his parents really were unknown but I have a vague memory of an article published about (say) 1991 that made a good case for identifying them. I used to have a pre-print of the article but it's currently lost in the clutter. Does anyone remember it?

Donald Lines Jacobus, M.A., comp., "The Four Spencer Brothers - Their Ancestors and Descendants," The American Genealogist, 27 (April 1951), pp. 79-87.
Thomas Spencer, baptized at Edworth, co. Bedford, 12 March 1571, buried at Stotfold, co. Bedford, 13 June 1631, as "Thomas Spenser, gent."; marriage not found. It would seem possible that the "Margaret Spenser, widow," who was buried at Stotfold 19 Dec 1635 was the widow of Thomas, but the Rev. Mr. Holding identifies her as the daughter of Thomas who had married a Spencer. Children: Anthony, Gerard and Thomas

However the new parents include Margaret Foss as wife, not Foss
My very old notes, taken largely from expert Gaylynn Spencer in the 1980s:
His ancestry is unknown, although there are many speculative connections to various English Spencer families and to other Spencer immigrants. He was once thought to have been a native of Winchcombe in Gloucester. A Thomas Spencer, son of Thomas Spencer, was baptized 1603 in Winchcombe. It was formerly believed that his wife's family, the Chadbournes, were also from Winchcombe, but they are now known to have been from Tamworth in Staffordshire, which casts doubt on whether Thomas originated there. A Thomas Spencer was baptized 28 Mar 1597, son of William at Eastwick, Herefordshire, England. (LND, 651-2). Further research is required to determine whether this could have been the Maine settler.
I'm going ahead and disconnecting Thomas as son of Thomas Spencer & Margaret Dooley. There's nothing about parents in The Great Migration Project. It's possible the Chadbourne Family Association might have something, that's why I tagged Roland. We can always re link if more info.
Hello,
Thomas Spencer ( Maine ) is not the Thomas Spencer of the 4 Spencer Brother's. I did find a baptism record from the Gloustershire historical society that list Thomas, son of Thomas . Not much to go on ill admit. By the way Thomas Spencer ( Maine ) is my 10th ggf and i have been searching for his parents for over 7 years. I did read on the Spencer Historical and Genealogy Facebook page of a theory of who his parents are.
I don't want to post it here as sadly some folks who are descended from the 4 Spencer Brothers can be a bit touchy when you suggest a link to the 4 Spencer Brother line.
