I have been searching with no success for my ancestor Ferdinand Hartzenberg, who is said to have come to the Cape of Good Hope / South Africa from Arnhem in the Netherlands. He was married in South Africa in 1777 to Gerbrecht Elizabeth Vosloo, and died on 14 November 1789 in Swellendam. On the assumption that his marriage to Gerbrecht was his first marriage, I guess he was probably in his twenties in 1777, which would mean he was born somewhere between 1747 and 1757. I would appreciate any assistance or guidance about where I can search for further details about him and his family in the Netherlands and document for his birth.

Thank you

Hartsenberg does not appear as a surname in Gelders until 1836 https://www.geldersarchief.nl/bronnen/personen?mivast=37&mizig=...

Hartzenberg is earlier but only once in 1806 https://www.geldersarchief.nl/bronnen/personen?mivast=37&miadt=...

9 baptisms between 1740 and 1760 for children named Ferdinand(us)

Nothing looks like your man, not conclusive proof but suggests he was not from Arnhem

Thank you Alex Moes for looking in these websites and referring me to them. I am not certain where the information that Ferdinand came from Arnhem came from, so it is very possible that it may be incorrect. I tried the various spellings for Hartzenberg, Hartzenburg, Hartsenberg and Hartsenburg, but I could not find a Ferdinand, but I did find several other names.

Have you tried spelling the name thus:

Hartzenburg or Hartsenburg

Thank you @Ben and Pam Karp. I have seen all the South African stuff, thank you, - I am looking for Dutch records to find out about his Dutch family connections and origins there. I have tried all the various spellings of the surname that I can think of and have numerous records of people that could be family connections, but nothing specifically connecting to Ferdinand.

Hi Lynette,

The link below is the VOC service record for Ferdinand which lists him as being from Arnhem.

He is also listed in the record of his marriage to Gerbrecht Elizabeth Vosloo as being from Arnhem.

Dutch baptisms for that far back generally used patronymics so it is possible that he is listed under a surname other than Hartzenberg, ie one based on his father's name. Considering the name Hartzenberg, it might be prudent to also check the Evangelisch Lutherse Kerk records for Arnhem as it is possible his parents were maybe German.
