Adam Crowell of Devon ... But our immigrant ancestor is supposedly of County Norfolk.

I'd like to disconnect and lock relationships.

Private User any opinion?

12/16/2017 at 2:44 PM

He's supposedly my 9th great grandparent but I have no definitive information as to his origins.

While on the Crowell subject are you familiar with the probable hoax in 1896 that an Elisha Crowell had died in Bristol England in 1812 and left money to Crowells in the US. I have transcribed copies of multiple letters exchanged between Canadian and US Crowell relatives raising money to send a solicitor to England to investigate. I never read anything about a resolution though.

Has a Crow family been conflated with the Crowells?

"General Notes: Father of Edward Crowell was taxed at Yarmouth in 1676. This Edward Crowell, reported to be the father of John and Yelverton Crowell in Yarmouth, In 1676 (Crowell Families of New Jersey, by Edwin Salter, Washington, DC, 5 Feb 1886 ), Ship Anne arrived Plymouth 8 July 1623, probably with this Edward as a passenger"

Edward 1623 Crow Crowell

The "fortune" story is great!

Elizabeth Crowell has children that do not belong to John Crow of Yarmouth.

According to the Great Migration project (notes in his profile)

- his origins are unknown
- he likely had an unnamed 1st wife, mother of Elizabeth & Yelverton
- he married Elishua, her parents unknown, around 1615. She was the mother of John Crow, Sr. of Charlestown & Moses

Anyone who knows the proper family configuration of these other Crows & Crowells, please advise

I agree Erica that you should disconnect Adam and lock. If anyone in future finds definitive
answer to John they can still share it.

Thanks Elizabeth MacKenzie - done!

I'll try to revisit the Crowell families & see how they can be put together.

I think there might have been a TAG article that speculated on how it might have worked.

12/19/2017 at 9:26 AM

Here is another probable confusion.. 1649 is the date of birth for Yelverton's daughter Elizabeth who married a Gifford. Her child Elizabeth Gifford is mentioned in John's will as a granddaughter. However, the profile and about section here list her as Elishu who the Crowell references indicate is John's wife.

Elizabeth Gifford

12/19/2017 at 10:01 AM

Oh no. Maybe i am wrong. The marriage reference says ELizabeth Crowell married Samuel Mathews and another reference says she moved to Cape May. So maybe there was a sister Elishu but born 1647 who married a John Gifford b 1642 as one other reference says.
I think I will take a rest from working on this for a while..

:(. It is a confusing family ...

Leslie Crowe may be should be contacted/added she might me helpful...

Please tag her to the discussion if you know how to reach her.

Leslie is having 'issues with logging on to geni' so this what she sent me: I asked a gentleman who has been studying John Crow/e about him and this is what he sent me
One thing to look at is your male relative's Y DNA. Only a male has it. And it usually follows the Surname through generations. If the Y DNA Haplogroup is Rb1, it most likely is the Irish/Scott-Irish Crowe/Crowells...The Brasted Kent Crowes, I believe, is a branch of the Norfolk England Crowes. And I don't believe they were Irish descent. Kent, Suffolk, and Norfolk Crowes are of the same ancestry, I believe. That would be a I1 M253 Haplogroup. That haplogroup has Viking/Norman influences. The three counties I mentioned are in old East Anglia. They would have to paths of Viking-English heritage. Either through the Early Viking raids and intermarriage into East Anglia. Or secondly, as a result of the Norman Conquest of England. Where Norman and Anglo-Saxon intermarried creating today's English...There is also a possibility of Welsh Crowes. A John Crow migrated to America through Boston and on to the Hartford/Windsor Connecticut area. He came from a town near the Welsh border... believe a Christopher Crowel line that migrated from Boston to Salem, Mancheser, and through Londonderry New Hampshire might be a Scot-Irish line. Londonderry New Hampshire was a Scot-Irish enclave. A group of Scot-Irish migrated to Onslow, Nova Scotia. This line further migrated north within NH/VT...to Hyde Park VT and Newport NH...my brothers Haplogroup R1b1b2a1a1 believed to be Scot-Irish Crowe/Crowell's...
I think the John they are looking for might be of M253 Haplogroup and no relation to mine but i could be wrong...

That’s very good, it’s suggesting the method to sorting these Crowe’s & Crowell’s of New England is chasing from the bottom up (current DNA tests).

The following is from No. 103. Library of Cape Cod History & Genealogy - THE CROWELL FAMILIES OF YARMOUTH. C.W. Swift, Publisher and Printer, Yarmouthport, Mass.: 1910.

Beginning on Page 6 of this Pamphlet:

In 1640 Mr. John Crwe was admitted a freeman of the colony, selected and appointed a magistrate. His associates were Thomas Dimmock of Barnstable, and Edmund Freeman of Sandwich. He was deputy to the Old Colony court in 1641, 1642 and 1643. On a loose leafe of the Yarmouth records is the following notice of his death: "The late Mas Crowell was buried the 7th of January, '72" O. S.
His name is entered on the index to the births in Yarmouth, but the page to which reference is had, is missing. Neither his will, not an account of the settlement of his estate is to be found on the Old Colony or Barnstable Porbate records. The entry of his name on the index makes it probable that some of his children were born in Yarmouth. John, Thomas Moses were his sons and Samuel probably. There was also a Judah Crow, among the early inhabitants of Yarmouth, but I can find no evidence that he was son to Mr John Crowe, or that he left any descendants.
In arranging the following list of descendants his names are numbered in the order they occur in the series. The figures are convenient for reference, and as each person named is designated by a number, the reader will be enabled to trace out the genealogy of members of the family. It is not pretended that the list is accurate, or as full as might be made. In a few instances only are the names of individuals born since 1750 given.

1. MR. JOHN CROWE, born in England or Wales, an inhabitant of Charlestown, 1635, to 1638, of Yarmouth, 1638, died in Yarmouth, January, 1673, N. S. He had children by his wife Elishua:2 John, born, as early as 1638.
3 Thomas, born as erly as 1645.4 Samuel, (probably a son of John.)
"Moses, son of Elishua Crow, and her husband John, baptized at Charlestown, 4 mo. 24 d. 1637." This son probably died young. Mr. John Crowe, (2) resided at "Nobscusset" and was called after the death of his father Senior to distinguish him from John Crow, son of Yelverton Crowe. He married Mehitable Miller, born at Roxbury, July 12, 1638, and daughter of the Rev John Miller. He deid (sic) January 28, 1688-9, and his widow Mehitable Crowell, February 23, 1714-15. The record of their children is lost. His estate was settled at the Prerogative Court held in Barnstable, March 6, 1688-9. His children then living are named in the settlement.
5 John, eldest son, born 1662, married Bethia Sears, 1684.
6 Samuel.
7 Mehitable.
8 Lydia, married Ebenezer Goodspeed February 15, 1679-80.
9 Jeremiah, born 1670, married Hannah Rider 1705.
10 Elizabeth.
11 Susannah.
12 Hannah, born April 1, 1677, married Joseph Studley april, 1706.
Thomas Tobey, a grandson, is also named, probably the son of a deceased daughter. [He was the son of Thomas Tobey, and was born February 2, 1676-7.]
Thomas Crowe, (3) married Agnes ______. He resided at "Bass Ponds," afterwards called Crow Town now West Dennis. His estate was settled March 9, 1689-90. He had two sons.
13 John
14 Thomas, married Elizabeth Jones.
The estate of Thomas Crowe, which is now held by his descendants, was by a mutual agreement dated April 18, 1690, divided between his two sons, they "voluntarily, freely and willingly, condescended to maintain our mother Agnes Crowell, in meat, drink and clothing, lodging and other necessaries according to our abilities-- and if she see cause to remove from us, to live any where else, we shall according to the verdict of two indifferent men, one of her choosing and another of ours, shall appoint her a portion to live upon according to our abilities while she remains a widow."
John and Thomas and their mother, signed the instrument, from which the above extract is made with their marks. That they should not have been able to write, is not strange. They lived in a remote part of the town, five miles from any school, and through their father was a man of some learning, the mother was uneducated; as is generally the case in such families, the children were brought up in ignorance.
Samuel Crowell (4) had in 1669 a house lot granted to him at South Sea, adjoining Mr. Yelverton Crowell's land. His name appears in the tax list for the year 1676, and he had November 6, 1685, marsh granted to him at the "Western Swan Pond River," which had been in his possession ten years. He was not an in habitant of Yarmouth 1694, and was then deceased, or he had removed.
His daughter
15 Hannah, was born February 14, 1674-5.
John Crowell (5) of Noscusset married Bethia Sears, daughter of Paul Sears, May 27, 1684.--He died October 15, 1728, aged 66 years. His grave stones were the first erected in the burying ground near the meeting house in North Dennis. His wife died May 5, 1724. He had issue:

23 Elizabeth, born 30 October, 1700, married Ben Homer, 1721.
24 Mary, born 25 December, 1704, married Thomas Bray 1724.
Samuel Crowell, (6) lived unmarried. There is no record of his having taken a wife. In the division of the common lands in 1710, he is recorded as not being the owner of a tenement, or of any taxable estate. He died April 12, 1723.
Jeremiah Crowell (9) married Hannah Rider, Nov. 29, 1705. He died at Nobscusset, Jer, anuary 30, 1745-6. He had issue.
25 Mary, born December, 1706.
26 Hannah, born -- August, 1708.

John Crowell, (13) of "Bass Ponds" married Sarah __. His will is dated 20 March, 1713-14, and was proved July 4, 1715. He names his "wife's oldest daughter Jane O. Kallia." He had issue.

12/21/2017 at 3:38 PM

I should have been clearer.

Anderson's Great Migration Begins project studied John Crowe, and updated the 1910 genealogy by --

- suggesting an unknown 1st wife in England, mother of Yelverton & Elizabeth
- Elishua as the mother of Moses (probably died young) and John

Thomas & Samuel etc have been disproved as children of John.

Clearly there was a possibly related Crowell family also arriving to the Plymouth Colony.

12/21/2017 at 10:04 PM

thanks for the clarification regardless this [the lengthy post of mine] should be out there to show/understand the refute to the main argument...
