Appears Mary Shay, mother of my great grandfather came to the US from Ireland and bore a child before marrying Thomas Shay, of Plumsted, New Jersey shortly before 1860. An obituary of my great grandfather states that his father was Richard Murphy. That may or may not be true. But it's a faint clue.
