Expedition to Nevada in pursuit of horse thieves of several tribes; California Vol, Cav under Major H.B. Mellen and Capt. A.W.Starr, setting forth from Camp Bidwell

80 miles from Camp Bidwell at Rock Canyon, Guano Valley, Nevada

Chief Smoke Chief Jim killed along with "81 warriors, 15 squaws and papooses" .. "19 squaws and papooses taken prisoner" but soon released; 15 wounded warriors escaped.
(no record found as yet on who "Smoke Creek Jim" was exactly.
"The band of Indians consisted of renegade Piutes, Bannocks, and Snakes"

CO C , 9th US Inf. arrived at Bidwell from San Fran. on May 29, 1866 to relieve Capt. Starr's Company 2nd Cal. Vol. Cav. which was sent to Sacramento to be mustered out of service.
Shortly thereafter, Co. A 1st US Cav arrived and by July 3 LT J.F. Small of the 1st became post adjutant (59 of 403)
