Matthys Andries de Beer, SV/PROG 2 - Do any who have had dna testing done have living matches in Finland, who also have Matthys Andries de Beer as a ggggrandfather?

Hmmm this is interesting, I also question the Finnish Y-DNA result for De Beer (being one of only a few), and I recall from memory there was a lady whom had children out of 2 marriages, of which the second marriage was with De Beer. It always comes to mind as I funnily enough found plenty living relatives stemming from the 2nd De Beer marriage, whilst I myself from the first relationship...

Eileen, as to the South African part of your tree, imho it is entirely possible to use atDNA to solve it. However, it is a daunting task and you will have to keep putting effort into investigating more than 100s of full trees. I think I will instead of posting the solution here, write it up in a project for all to contribute.

Jan I would be greatfull for any help and sugestions. Else the whole "dna thing" is realy just a waste of time and money.

Hi there, I have also been perplexed re the number of Finnish dna matches.
My 3 x g grandfather was Anders Stockenstrom, who arrived here in SA on the 2nd December 1782.
Through that connection, i have 55 dna matches from Sweden, on one hosting site, with more than double that from Finland.
I have noticed the De Beer links to Finland, and Blomerus in my tree, and would like to work on finding out more details?

Stanley yes I think your tree is fascinating, in the sense that you have parts of your tree which are un-linked, and some of your atDNA matches oddly match mine, yet there is no clear path on Geni to those profiles for you (yet there are for me, and yet I don't have those ancestors in my tree)

If I may venture a wild guess, it may show that some parts of your tree is more local than what you currently have it. However, will do a detailed analysis later tonight (cant right now)

No, my wild guess was not correct, predominantly as upon refreshing the "how are you related?" paths it magically became within 6-9 relationship steps towards those I also have as atDNA matches, therefore the search should be done on the atDNA matches remaining with completed trees and empty or more than 8-10 relationship steps...

I believe that 'our' 'stamvader' , Mathijs Andriesz, who arrived in this country by ship during 1699 did not have the surname of de Beer ! He adopted that name two years after arriving here. We are actually from Finland and our surname was most probably Haloppa

Yes I have many Finnish matches, although some might be via a more recent Swedish link on another side of my family tree. In FTDNA there is certainly one Finnish match that is also matched with a very large number of my fellow South African matches. Hard to believe that DNA from the late 17th century could still be linked, but it seems that segments in excess of 8cm are extant in Afrikaners and certain people in Finland. I am American for the record.

There is article in the Oct/Nov 2012 Prince Albert Friend on pages 14, 15 on the de Beer Families. DNA tests taken and matches.

Just a quick update. I see my mother now has a DNA match on geni to a person with the surname Holappa.
There is no tree attached. Wonder if this could be the connection we have been waiting for ? Any one else pick up this match ?

I will be focussing on Geni, and will also join the group started by Jan.
The Holappa name / connection is very interesting and pertinent to many of my DNA Finnish matches, which have soared.
Compounding this Finnish puzzle is my close paternal De Beer ancestry, mixed together with my other close paternal Swedish roots.
Sweden and Finland were one country for 800 or 900 years in the past?

My mom's Finnish matches there are the highest at 2446, followed by South Africa and a few others, Swedish 896. (About 4th place on the country list)

About the Holappa surname
Holappa is a Finnish surname. The name Holappa has its origin in a Russian word holop which means “slave” or “soul” (see “Dead Souls” by Nikolai Gogol). The first Holappas came from behind the Russian border around the 1500 to Swedish side, to the area that would later become Finland. Finland was a part of Sweden that time.
