I am researching Joseph who I believe to be my 6th great grandfather. I need information showing him to be the father of Edmund Adcock, 1755-1799 married to Joannah Stinson 1760 - ?. Both were born in VA; both died in GA.

Does anyone know of a will, deed, or other document showing Edmund as Joseph's son?

Thank you,
Linda J Conrad

"Adcock" means the son of Adam. The name Adcock was known as early as 1311 in England. Adcock emigration from the British Isles occurred prior to the Revolutionary War. Joseph and Elizabeth (Anderson)Adcock were living in Albemarle County, VA before 1746 in that portion of the county which later became part of Buckingham. Therefore, it can be said that they moved to Buckingham but the move was jurisdictional, since Buckingham County was formed in 1758.

It is clear that Joseph was in Albemarle County in 1746 since he was mentioned six times in the County Order Book in 1746 and 1747. In June 1748 Joseph Adcock sold real estate in Albemarle County. On August 14, 1750 Joseph purchased 400 acres in Albemarle from William Rice for 60 pounds. This land appears to have straddled Buffalo Creek which is a branch of the Willis River and is located in today's southeast Buckingham County. Joseph Adcock's land appears in a property description as adjoining lands of Joseph Adcock, Joseph Adcock, Jr., John Adcock and Thomas Christian. Some 1764 Buckingham County tax lists were found in the records of Prince Edward County. In 1782 and 1783, Elizabeth Adcock's name was on the real property tax lists of Buckingham County as the owner of 240 acres. She also owned five slaves: Abram, Jack, Jean, Sallie and Bett.
