This is my father's Y-DNA haplogroup, but nowhere can I find any discussion on the ancient origins of this subclade. I understand that the Altai region of Russia is one of the ancient locations, but after that? Did this subclade move in large part into Scandinavia?
The surname is London - very generic with no clues. I am wondering how in the ancient past my ancestors arrived in Great Britain. The scanty clues seem to point to a Viking origin in the 7th and 8th centuries.

Can anyone help shed light on this for me? Any assistance much appreciated.

Wondering the same thing about my Irish father. I read on 23 and me that the haplogroup could link to the Vikings but nothing definitive.

@How nice to "meet" you Catherine. I'm assuming your father has the same Y-DNA haplogroup signature as my father, S-24902....? My brother and I await exciting news, as he has applied for the Big-Y 700 in the recent sales on FamilyTreeDNA. You will be interested I am sure, so stay tuned! Please get in touch with me in a month or so, in the new year, and see if we've gotten the results yet. I don't want to forget, but my husband is a semi-invalid and my plate is overflowing right now. We're hoping the Big-Y 700 will answer the questions we both have. Happy Holidays, Marilyn
Is your father's surname Tyrrell?

Happy Holidays to you too! Thank you for your response! My father’s Surname is Carroll. Very interesting to hear about the “Big-Y700” - totally new to me. 23 and me said that the R-S24902 was fairly common but not sure if that is with the Irish. We live in California but come from Minnesota where my father’s family lived at least for several generations.

Almost 4 years late to this conversation, but this is my dad's haplogroup as well. My paternal lineage is from northern Europe/Baltics.

Hi, everybody! I have S24902 SNP too. Add me to your project please.

Hello.

My paternal line comes from R-S24902:

R1a - R-M207>M173>M420>M459>M198>M417>PF6162>Z283>Z282>Z280>S24902>FT3245>YP561>YP564>YP566>YP4668>YP4664>BY176489>FT33212.

To get a more definitive haplogroup or subclade, I recommend to head over to FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA) and buy their Big Y-700 Y-DNA test. It will help you if you are researching your paternal line. Just remember, this test is only administered to a male subject. If you have a male sibling or a paternal uncle, you can get the test for them as a gift!
