The name McDowell is a modification of the Gaelic Mac Dhu ghall, or MacDougal, meaning son or descendant of the dark stranger (or Dane). The name was given over ten centuries ago to Norse settlers in Galloway, Scotland and the descendants of a son of Prince Fergus and Princess Elizabeth de Galloway, daughter of King Henry I of England.
