I am a direct descendant of James Porter who was born in 1789 and died in 1830 in Grayson County, Virginia. He married Susannah Elizabeth Keith. Their children were Alexander, James, Elizabeth, George, and William. I have been successful in tracing the family history of their children, but have found very little information about James and Susannah. James, in particular, has been an enigma. His father was also named James, but there is no mention of his wife or his parents. Based on my Family Tree DNA, I discovered that my earliest known Porter ancestor was Hugh Porter who married Jane Wilkins. Hugh and Jane emigrated from Londonderry, Ireland to Washington County, Pennsylvania. Their children were: Archibald, Hugh, Margaret, Nancy, and Rebecca.
