pp.102-17 of Thoroton's "Antiquities of Nottinghamshire" gives an extensive history of the family and their estate, including a lovely pedigree chart.

Of course I'm very confused, but I'll dive right in anyway. Apparently:

Gervas de Clifton I (b.1186; m.1204 to wife Unknown) had a sister named Ysmania who married (also in 1204) Gervas de Rabacy de Glapton

Gervas de Clifton II (b.1236) m. the daughter of Robert Alvideleg

The sister of Gervas II, Cecily de Clifton, m. Roger de Cressi (the grandson of Ysmania de Clifton and Gervas de Rabacy de Glapton)

Gervas de Clifton II was arrested and imprisoned for robbery, hence he couldn't inherit, and the estate was passed to Ysmania (I think).

Sir Gervas de Clifton III, Knight, was the Sheriff of Notts and Derbyshire and he married Amfelisia, the daughter of Sir William Sampson, Knight, of Eperston, Notts

Sir Gervas de Clifton III, Sheriff of Notts and Derbyshire, purchased the old family manors of Clifton and Wilford, along with the manor of Broughton, recovering the family's losses and enriching them further

However, Gervas de Clifton de Wilford de Glapton IV died young (before his father), having m. Alice, daughter of Robert de Rabacy (son of a younger? Gervas de Rabacy)

Richard Martell and wife Margaret de Rabacy were Gervas de Clifton IV's brother and sister in-law (by his marriage to Alice)

and so on...more Gervas's some taking the surname de Wilford, others reverting back to de Clifton, with one Robert de Clifton (m. Emme, daughter of Sir Wm. Moton) thrown in just to make it more interesting.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clifton_baronets

"The Clifton Baronetcy, of Clifton in the County of Nottinghamshire, was created in the Baronetage of England on 22 May 1611 for Sir Gervas Clifton, of Clifton Hall, Nottingham. This Clifton family took their name from the settlement on the Bank of the River Trent at Clifton, Nottinghamshire, which they made their home at the time of the Norman Conquest. The family was much involved in the events of its times. Several members of the family served from the 13th century as High Sheriff of the counties of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Sir John Clifton was slain fighting for the King at the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1402. Sir Gervase Clifton was captured and beheaded following the Battle of Tewkesbury during the Wars of the Roses in 1471."

Private User, thank you for that additional info and the work you put into discovering more facts on those confusing lines.

You're welcome, researching them is fun! The difficult part is making sense of it and somehow utilizing it to build a nice tree. :)
