I think on one hand I appreciate the consistency checker and then on the other hand I am seeing where has there is going to be a lot of confusion.... that should be avoided could be avoided...

there needs to be some means for people with questions to have a curator tell them whether or not a correction is needed because of the strange naming systems this could cause a huge disaster well-meaning collaborators could cause some serious problems especially I'm thinking in places like the Welsh medieval tree....

For example this file I think is just fine but it is questioning whether or not this is the correct last name for the children... Which obviously it is however it's slightly spell different....

if well-meaning people go in there trying to make corrections they could actually be correcting things that don't need to be corrected there for causing a great deal of trouble...

I'm guessing anyway

so for me personally in the interest of not screwing anything up I would like to just ask if there is a place where we can post these inconsistencies with curators who know whether or not this is accurate or inaccurate and then make the corrections not just have people randomly going in and making corrections...

SIr Reginald Braybrooke, MP

This one is saying the children's last names are different...

But obviously they are correct though the spelling is somewhat different

Please advise

I could be wrong I mean I see the need for it and I see how it can be helpful to alert people to inconsistency however I see where it leaves open the opportunity for well-meaning people to go in and make so-called corrections that actually do not need to be corrected...

I see can o worms potentially...

I mean I look at something like this and thank oh-oh yeah alright maybe I need to drop the o and add an e and then the system will like it but really I seriously could have been messing with a profile that did not need to be changed because in fact it was accurate but the consistency checker is not quite that delicate to be able to sort it out for itself so it calls it an inconsistency when in fact it's not wrong...

I hope that makes sense

John Brooke

This one says his burial was after his death this may not be terribly unusual in some cultures I understand they don't bury people for like a year also in some places they can't bury them because the ground is Frozen so this may or may not be an actual consistency conflict but how am I to know...

So I guess I'll just put it on the list and hope a curator knows better and can fix it I guess...

Dr. Ichabod Foote

This one says he has a birth event before his birth date...

And this one says there is an inconsistency because he has had a child between the ages of 1 and 15

Dr. Ichabod Foote

I mean I suppose I could go in there all roughshod half-cocked and wild making assumptions and guesses but I'm thinking that I should better wait for people who know more than me....

Good morning, Cheley,

The consistency checker has been helpful in sprucing up the lower branches of my own tree, and in identifying serious issues elsewhere.

So I appreciate it, and have selected the option to "ignore" or "hide" whenever appropriate (for very close relatives, which are to be found conveniently listed for us simply by clicking on the "Home" tab).

I've already made some of the easier changes, and now have a handy list of more difficult problems for future reference. So that's really nice. It provides me with some important genealogical goals.

With regard to the more ancient profiles and distant relatives (Colonial, Medievel, MPs, etc.) that require Curator intervention, Discussions, and/or respectable documentation to accompany any changes -- there are policies already in place.

So hopefully the curators responsible for those profiles are busy checking the automatically identified inconsistencies on them. Once "hidden" or "ignored" -- they happily disappear from view. Yay!

Nevertheless, it is always more pleasant to believe that everyone with a Geni account is respectful, honest, and imbued with good common sense or education -- and not just playing with or misconstruing the programs.

A bad case of anarchy would probably destroy the whole system or render it meaningless, and I doubt there would be anything of real value to gain from that.

And personally I don't feel compelled to 'make all the inconsistency symbols go away' immediately, because to begin with they don't always represent REAL inconsistencies, just possible ones.

Their purpose is to call attention to potential problems, not dictate immediate action be taken in every case. And some of the real problems will obviously require more research, proper documentation, and perhaps discussion, etc. So it takes time and effort; they're not always going to be a quick or easy fix.

Fortunately, one person isn't responsible for the whole world tree. We have lots and lots of good help around here. I'm patient enough to wait and see how long it takes to clean it all up.

The Public Discussion announcing the Consistency Checker is: - it is a good place to post questions, etc. about it.

Private User - nice comment; possibly you might post it (or something similar) in that Discussion - have not seen anything that helpful there.

Thank you, Private User . I was completely unaware of the other discussion and will need to update myself first before possibly commenting later. But in the meantime you're perfectly welcome to quote, plagiarize ( :D ), or link to this one if you like. I really don't mind a bit, just happy to be of some service occasionally.

Ok, I think, and thanks? Really, I'm too busy to get involved with most of this. To start, I picked this site about 8 years ago because it was free, I had a family "Bible" of just about every ancestor going back to at least 900 A.D., I put all of that in, and left it as public. All of what happened since I did that has not been me. I just look at an email from Geni about somebody adding something whenever I have the time.

Go ahead and make corrections.
