A researcher writes:

Good evening My great grandfather is Captain Williams Smith and I would like you to disconnect his lineage from Colonel Lawrence Smith. We have no proof that that is his father we suspected his father’s name was Sydney Smith And somehow related to the smiths of Westinhanger and Lords Of Strangford our family crest has nothing to do with the Smiths of Totenheim our crest we have 3 Lions on a gold field with a blue ribbon forming a gable in the middle and the motto on the bottom says Virius incendit Vires. I hope this information helps But we have been unable to find who CAPT William Smith’s father was for over 200 years. Governor extra Billy Smith supposedly had a ring with this family crest on it. So I hope all this information helps you.

If anyone has evidence supporting this William Smith as child of Col. Lawrence Smith please advise.

I see a William Smith mentioned here:

http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~ja7smith/family/1600s_Direct.html

But alas, all of these documents give us most of the names of Lawrence’s children with Mary Dedman:

Charles Smith (b. abt. 1655 in York Co., VA), La

Lawrence (Col.) Smith (b. abt. 1657),

John (Sir) Smith (b. abt. 1660 in Gloucester Co., VA),

Sarah Smith (b. 1 Jan 1661 in Essex Co. VA),

Augustine (Maj. or Col.) Smith (b. 16 Jun 1666 in Essex Co. VA),.

Elizabeth Smith (b. abt. 1668), and

William Smith (b. abt. 1680 in Spotsylvania, VA – his mother was Mary Hitchson).

Do we have Williams mixed up?

Tagging Kevin Patrick Carey

We do

And he was supposedly born in 1690

Now I read the article that you posted and that crest is in there . We have a gold field with the blue ribbon. 3 lions Thomas Customer Smythe is our supposed ancestor

Look at Extra Billy Smith And look at the later generations of my Smiths William is a very popular name. William Rowley Smith, William Smith Governor Of Virginia we don’t have later lines having anyone by the name of
Lawrence or Christopher. Henry Yes and we would also take the mother’s maiden name and give it as a first name or middle name. As for George Washington and Robert E Lee I’m related to both of them both said people we share Grandfathers. Robert E Lee had a nephew by the name of Sydney Smith Lee but I have no
Idea where is connection to the Smiths lie.

It’s the Virginia mystery! Colonel Richard Lee Reverend David Stewart captain William Smith all have disputed ancestry‘s and I’m a Direct descendent of all three mentioned people.
