Geni does not allow me to make changes or I would do this myself.

The Overview page of Thomas Buford lists the message I sent in a while ago. It begins "Nathan Twyman raises the question whether or not Elizabeth Lee was Thomas Buford's wife. He wrote on 30 Jan 2020 the following:"

However, the end of my message is immediately followed by the beginning of someone else's message, which makes claims I did not make and do not agree with--and for which no evidence exists. Because there is no separation between my own message and the next, it appears that I am endorsing this error-filled narrative. Could you please add a space or separator along with a note showing that is someone else's message following my own? The end of my message concludes with "Thank you for your consideration."

Thank you for your consideration. ;)

Nathan

Done. Also working on disconnecting Elizabeth Medstand Howson from the Buford tree as per your notes.

Elizabeth Buford

Feel free to edit. I’m adding you as a manager.

These are direct ancestors for my son on his paternal side, so I'm not very famliiar with them. I'm confused why this profile:

Mary Buford

does state her as Mary Early.

This Find-a-Grave page indicates the SAR used her as the wife of Thomas Sr. and mother of Thomas Jr.:

Thomas Buford Jr

in the U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications, 1889-1970

Name: Thomas Buford Jr

Birth Date: 1682

Birth Place: Lancaster, Virginia

Death Date: 1761

Death Place: Middlesex, Virginia

SAR Membership: 95895

Role: Ancestor

Application Date: 30 Jul 1967

Father:
Thomas Buford

Mother:
Mary Early

But it also shows Thomas Jr. married to Elizabeth Lee, which I've been reading is refuted. So is Mary Early also refuted?

Ancestry shows:

Name: Thomas Buford
Gender: Male
Birth Place: VA
Birth Year: 1663
Spouse Name: Mary Early
Spouse Birth Place: VA
Spouse Birth Year: 1664
Marriage Year: 1681

The source for the above marital info is:

U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900

Curator's note: I can find no proof that this Mary is the wife of Thomas Beauford, Sr. I can also find no proof that she wasn't his wife. He married Mary in c.1681 and she died c.1720. Nothing more has been proven yet on the Buford/Beauford line. Maria Edmonds-Zediker, curator, 5/6/2011

Mary Buford

Ok, thanks

But...just a thought...that note is dated 2011, that's 10 years ago. New information is often available online that wasn't there before. So I don't know if Maria had seen the SAR information or the marriage record that both list her as Mary Early. Like I said, just a thought...because the Find-a-Grave page wasn't made until 31 Aug 2019.

They have too many children. I think there’s a generation mixup.

Apparently the Early family does not have her, and they should know.

Yes, Maria is very familiar with SAR.

MEZ is my mentor on classy VA families. I’ve needed very few updates to her research.

Here’s a more reliable source than SAR pedigree.

The Old Free State: A Contribution to the History of Lunenburg County and Southside Virginia, by Landon C. Bell. Vol. II. 1927 p. 178. https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015027788739&view=1up&... Hathitrust

Thomas3 Beauford (b. in Lancaster County, Va., 1663, d. Dec. 9, 1716), son of John and Elizabeth (Parrot) Beauford, married Mary (last name not known), who died Dec. 29, 1720.

They had:

  • Thomas4 Beauford, Jr. (b. 1682, baptized May 21, 1682). Married Elizabeth.
  • Henry4 Beauford (b. 1684, baptized March 15, 1684). married Mary (Parsons) Osborne on 12 Sep 1707 in Middlesex, Virginia, widow of John Parsons and daughter of Henry Osborne.[1]
  • Mary4Beauford (b. March 18, 1688). No further record

As a reminder - U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 is a crap collection at Ancestry. A start point only.

And here’s another Buford family book giving her as Mary unknown.

I didn't know that about the marriage records. Good to know.

Well, at least we have her first name, and thanks for the extra info on the Buford family, since I'm unfamiliar with them.
