In 1868 Rosalie and Guido were married at the Mairie of the 9th arrondissement
in Paris. In 1876 after Rosalie's mother Hendlé Schwabacher died, Guido bought
a Villa on a street called rue Boulougne which later became rue Ballu. Villa 8 was
at the bottom of an impasse which became known as Villa Ballu when the street name
changed. We now live in the Villa. On the bedroom of our ceiling is a large painting by
Ferdinand Humbert (1842-1934) which we believe was commissioned by Guido because it was during
the six years in which Guido and Rosalie lived there that Humbert was painting several
models that resemble the one on our ceiling. I am writing a book about Humbert who was
very well-known at the time but unjustly forgotten today. He has 8 large canvases in the
Pantheon, two enormous ceiling paintings in the Petit Palais, was a member of the
Institute and was the professor of
the first atelier for women in the Ecole des beaux arts in Paris (1900-1929). If you know anything about
Guido and Rosalie's purchase of that painting please get in touch with me at dwhawes@gmail.com
