Today I found four volumes on the history of Balassagyarmat, written in Hungarian, online at hungaricana.hu:
https://library.hungaricana.hu/en/collection/mltk_megy_nogr_nite/

The 1995 volume in particular has details on the Jewish history, population, and the holocaust, including two lists of martyrs (480 and 290 names, possibly with some overlap). See here: https://library.hungaricana.hu/en/view/NOGM_NITE_02/?pg=0&layout=s

The text is searchable, and you can copy/paste into Google Translate, which is currently doing a tolerable job of Hungarian -> English translation.

HI Peter, My ancestors are from Balassagyarmat and I have looked at the volumes you note in your thread and tried to contact the local cemetery but they have not written back. I found one grave on line that might be in family chain Ungar Davidne. I have tried finding them on Jewish Gen and keep getting stuck. Any suggestions where I could find more birth, marriage certificates? I have noted that there are very few resources. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks. Michael.

My ancestors are largely from Paszto and nearby villages although a few also resided in Balassagyarmat - families names were mostly Hercz/Herz and Himler, but also a few Fischers.
