Someplace I found a reference to Eleanor Dunn, "a baseborn child", apprenticed out to Peter Faust etc. etc. I have also found one family tree on line that classifies Eleanor as a half sister to John Dunn's other children by his first wife, Mary. Does anyone know if this is correct and what exactly a baseborn child? D o we have documentation for his wives and children? I have only found marriage license for Frances, his last wife. His children have been determined mostly by preponderance of evidence and process of elimination as far as I can tell. Only a couple have been named in records.
Another online tree has the marriage date for John and Mary Reid. Were they married in MD where he lived with the Rumseys after coming to America? Or was it in VA in the Augusta area where he is said to have spend some time after Rumsey died and before he came to Salisbury? One author stated he lived in Reid's Creek area where he was a shoemaker and studied law. Other authors have stated various versions of his history and origins. How do we know what is fact?
Has anyone ever made a definitive study of John Dunn's genealogy?

Hello Lynda Herndon, there is a link on John Dunn's profile page to the DAR database. There is only one approved application through that Patriot. It was done recently (in DAR time). The line goes through his daughter Eleanor. That application shows Eleanor as the daughter of Mary Unknown. The information that was submitted with that application is available for purchase from DAR. For a reasonable fee you can download it online. You might consider that.

I am a DAR member and am aware that Mary unk is listed as mother of all his children except his daughter by last and surving wife Frances. Mary also signs many legal docs with John as his wife.
Bios refer to Mary Reid of Reid’s Creek where he lived before coming to Salisbury. But no details ever given.
Some confusion has also resulted from his son and namesake s marriages.
Much erroneous and conflicting information on his origins has been written.
Has anyone ever thoroughly researched this man from his arrival in America and life in Md as associate of Rumsey and James Carter to his arrival in Salisbury?
Seems like a man of such prominence in NC Rev War history would have researched with documentation!
