QUERY
Who is William CLARKSON. grandson of Hawkins who was the informant on his death certificate?
Potential CLARKSON's are
NSW Marriage Record - Mountfort CLARKSON married Mary SMITH in 1850
NSW Marriage Record - Mountfort CLARKSON married Jemima FISHER in 1833
NSW Birth Record - William T CLARKSON born 1842 to Mountford and Jemima
But this William would only be 14 in 1856
Leanne. Your last query.
The William Clarkson is in fact the person who registered the death at St. Albans.
The informant, who is Joseph's grandson, would be William Baker. He is the son of Mary Ann and William Baker. The death certificate copy does not show the Baker name very well. The Informant column and the Particulars of Registration column are separate.
Your query at 12.20pm.
Family 1
*Joseph Smith, not Joseph William Smith. There is no evidence on all of the documents that I have of Joseph having a middle name of William.
*Father, Joseph Smith 1745-1835. I have no evidence of this being his father.
*Mother, Hannah Ann Rice-Smith 1751-1817. I have no evidence of this being his mother.
*Married 1798 to Mary Darkinjung Darkinjung. I have no evidence to support this claim.
*1799 birth of Elizabeth. I have no evidence to support this.
*1802 birth of Elizabeth Smith. I have no evidence to support this.
*1812 marriage to Margaret Holmes, correct. Not Margaret Mary Holmes. I have no evidence to support the middle name of Mary.
The 3 children, Joseph 1804, William 1809 and Mary Ann 1811 are correct.
Family 2
This Joseph Smith appears to be a different person. I think the two families have been mixed up.
The information that I have on the children of Joseph and Margaret Holmes are.
Margaret bought 3 children into the relationship with Joseph. Charlotte Smith, George Smith both children of William Smith. And James Shannon son of Patrick Shannon. She then had the 3 children with Joseph. Joseph 1804, William 1809 and Mary Ann 1811. This is backed up in the 1806 Muster that states that Joseph Smith is supporting 4 children.
This profile James Henry Smith was originally attached as a child of Joseph SMITH and Margaret HOLMES however he is the son of a Joseph SMITH and Elizabeth
NSW Birth Record 3340/1813 - James SMITH, father James, mother Elizabeth
Re additional children possibly reared by Joseph SMITH
Margaret (Holmes) Morrison - Smith - Shannon - Smith [Convict "Mary Ann" 1791]
had
to William Morrison, Crew "Mary Ann" 1791
* 1792 William Holmes, infant died 1795
to William Smith, Convict "Scarborough" 1790
* 1794 Charlotte Cobcroft
* 1796 George S. Smith
to Patrick Shannon
* 1799 James Shannon
This would match the 4 children listed in 1806 census (with their son Joseph)
Could you please upload a copy of the 1806 muster as it helps with evidence that Elizabeth SMITH 1802 and Elizabeth SMITH 1799 are not his children
I have detached Elizabeth Smith born 1802
There are no NSW birth records for an Elizabeth SMITH born 1802.
She is either a duplicate of Elizabeth SMITH born 1799 who married BAKER or she is someone elses child completely.
Re Joseph SMITH married Ann RICE
http://www.thetreeofus.net/11267.htm
Joseph SMITH 1745 married Hannah / Ann RICE 1773
* Joseph Wilson SMITH 27/3/1774
* Ann SMITH 15/2/1787
Daughter Ann SMITH
married 18/7/1808 (UK) to 1) Thomas BAILEY
* 1810 (UK) John Thomas BAILEY
* 1813 (UK) Thomas BAILEY
Convicted - arrived in Australia on "Northhampton" in 1815 with sons
married 2) George TAYLOR
* 1822 (NSW) Sarah TAYLOR
* 1824 (NSW) Eliza TAYLOR
died Australia
This is the daughter Ann Bailey - Taylor
This suggests that Joseph Smith [Convict "Neptune" 1790] and Ann Bailey - Taylor were siblings and their sons married BAKER sisters
Evidence needs to be supplied to support these parents to these convicts..
Looking at various internet trees
Joseph SMITH and Hannah SMITH have children listed as
* Joseph Leonard SMITH 1773-1856 married Margaret HOLMES
* Joseph William SMITH 1780-1856 married Margaret HOLMES
* Joseph Wilson SMITH 1763-1856 married Margaret HOLMES
I will detach the parents until evidence can be supplied that tie them to either convict
Here are links to the profiles for the parents of Joseph and Ann - created to stop unsourced parents being added
{unknown mother of Joseph Smith}
{unknown father of Joseph Smith}
{unknown mother of Ann Smith}

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=428026.0 has some interesting information regarding Elizabeth born 1799 that confirms that her parents are Joseph SMITH and an aboriginal woman but falls short confirming that Joseph SMITH is the 1790 convict.
"I have traced Elizabeth Smith back to her common law marriage to John Bailey, therefore confirming that she is my family’s Elizabeth. When trying to trace her parents I found two Elizabeth’s. The first had parents listed as Thomas Smith and Ann Colpitts. But our family tree did not trace to this couple. (Unfortunate as I would have loved to have First Fleeters in our family). The other Elizabeth has no birth record but through a private source I have been told her father was Joseph, mother unknown but believed to be aboriginal. This brings me to Joseph Smith.
The only Joseph Smiths in the Hawkesbury at that time was Joseph Smith, convict from the Neptune, and his son Joseph born 1804.
Joseph did marry Margaret Holmes in 1812. They had a common law marriage prior to that from 1802.
In the book “The Second Fleet – Britain’s Grim Convict Armada of 1790” by Michael Flynn it was recorded that in 1806 the couple were supporting 4 children. Margaret had 4 children prior to her becoming the partner of Joseph but two of these children died by 1799, which left 2 of Margarets children, plus one child with Joseph, and Elizabeth to make up the four recorded. (Margaret and Joseph’s other 2 children were born after ths 1806 record). And again on his death certificate it only lists 3 children to Margaret. We have Elizabeth born c 1799 prior to Joseph and Margaret getting together. Margaret was in another relationship at this time.
Elizabeth Smith had a common law marriage to John Bailey. A map of the Mcdonald Valley, Hawkesbury in the early 1800’s shows much land belonging to the Smiths and the Baileys. Thinking back to those early days, people did not travel far and it is not inconceivable that before they married Elizabeth lived close by to John. This can be seen in fly map from the book “The forgotten Valley” by Marjorie Hutton Neve.
I have searched for information of Elizabeth’s parentage on many sites, many forums. I know that you can not take forum information as THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH but just about every one that I have read lists Elizabeth as Father Joseph Smith mother Aboriginal. (A lot of information from the Hunter Valley Geneology Forum). As records of that time are hard to trace and indigenous genealogy almost impossible, I do not know how to go any further. Again the only Joseph Smith I could find in that area at that time was Joseph from the convict ship Neptune.
All this information was placed before Mrs J Woollard, a noted family historian from the Southern Highlands and she reached the conclusion that there was a 99% chance that Elizabeth was a child of Joseph. I would love to have proof absolute that Elizabeth is this Joseph’s child but I have not been able to find proof that she is not his child and until I do will accept that this is likely to be correct. If anyone has proof or information contrary to this please let us know."
I have created an alternative Joseph for the father of Elizabeth SMITH born 1799 untill evidence can be brought forward to connect him to the Joseph SMITH who married Margaret HOLMES
Joseph Smith
I have been in contact with the Darkinjung Local Area Land Council in an effort to confirm the existance of 'Old Mary' Dunkinjung and to link her to Elizabeth Smith (1799-1846) and her father Joseph Smith (1773-1856). DLALC have forwarded my information to University of NSW for further investigation. I live in hope.
Thanks a lot Leanne for your work. It could work out that my Joseph is Elizabeths father.
But I have 3 of Margaret's children pre Joseph Smith with her in 1806, I could be wrong. GeorgeSmith, Charlotte Smith and James Shannon. William Morrisson died at 3 years of age in 1795. Was there another death?
Also, do we know for sure that Elizabeth who married John Bailey in 1823 was in fact part indigenous.
Leanne.
This is an email from Jennifer Burgess, not sure if you saw it.
I am contacting you about this profile: Joseph Smith [Convict "Neptune" 1790]
A mtDNA test on a direct female line descendant of Elizabeth Smith has shown there is no truth in the story that Elizabeth descends from Joseph and Mary Darkinjung. Elizabeth has a haplogroup H1bb which is pure English. If she had been aboriginal, there would have been an aboriginal haplogroup passed down from Elizabeths mother to her female descendants. This test is conclusive proof of Elizabeths mothers line
