On November 17, 1827, he married Brita Bjednesdtr at the Strand Parish in Rogaland, Norway: Sand Parish Records, LDS microfilm # 0126144. The record indicates he was from Itre Bjerga at the time of his marriage, and that he was 22 years of age. Marriage year also given in Sand Gardar og folk p. 583.

Alf and Brita moved to the Mokliev farm in the Suldal Parish from the Sand/Jelsa parish June 22, 1830 with daughter Turi: Suldal Parish Records "Tilgangs - Lister" (Arrival List) LDS Film 0126354. They lived at the Mokleiv farm, Rogaland, Norway from 1830 to 1841. The Mokliev farm is on the "Sudalsvatnet" 1:50,000 topographical map at 69 W 07 N.

In 1841 the family moved from the Mokliev farm to the Indre Selland farm on the Hylsfjorden near Sand, Norway. See p. 519 of Gamle Suldal and pp. 645 - 646 of Sand Gardar og folk. The Indre Selland farm is on the "Sauda" 1:50,000 topographical map at 60 W 05 N.

Emmigrated from Stavanger, Norway 5 May, 1874 and arrived at Quebec, Canada on 18 June, 1874 on the ship SS Brodene. He was accompanied by his wife, his daughter Aagot and her family, his son Hadle and his family, and his daughter Anna (married to Lars Lundervold) and their family. Their daughter Turi and her husband Halvor Holte, along with their four children, emmigrated from Norway to the United States via Quebec the previous spring.

The ship list gives his name as Alf A. Selland, age 68: Public Archives of Canada.

They settled in Beaver Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota.
