“The family of Nathan Guttman was purportedly the first Jewish family to gain legal entry to Bardejov. When Nathan died at an early age, his widow Rachel, “the mother of Bardejov Jewry,” assumed his responsibilities, efficiently administrating the family’s mills and agricultural lands until her own death in 1828. Guttman’s descendants, including the Guttman, Harpuder, Rosenwasser, Feuerlicht, and Löwy families, were among the founders of the official Bardejov Jewish community in 1806 or 1808. They also helped organize the Chevra Kadisha Jewish burial society, formally established on April 15, 1815.”
