I descend from Alexander Stewart and Mary Bailey, both of whom were immigrants from the British Isles. Alexander arrived alone in Philadelphia in 1697 as a 13 year old boy, a product of child-trafficking from Scotland in the Pennsylvania Colony in those days, particularly in Chester County. I do not believe he was originally born Quaker but became convinced when he married Mary Bailey whose family was Quaker in Wiltshire, England. Mary Bailey's parents were Joel Bailey and Ann Short. Ann Short came over on the sailing vessel, "Welcome" with William Penn in 1682. Sadly, her mother, Miriam Short died en route from a breakout of smallpox.

A have a plethora of aDNA matches with descendants of 1680s Quaker families who settled in Chester County, PA as well as New Castle County, DE, but I am not at all clear about how each fits into my family tree. These family surnames include: Harlan, Clayton, Beeson, Grubb, Hadley, Lindley, Buffington, Heald, Cloud, Pyle, Mendenhall, Thornburgh, and others. Perhaps others are finding similar matches and I would love to be able to correspond with you about these.

Dear Gerd Stewart, We have family that came as Quakers to PA during the late 1600's. Their family names are Bond, Stewart, and Hadley. They settled in Chester and Delaware, and many moved to NC. Later many moved to IN, Iowa,KS,MT, ID, and WA. I can provide more details if needed. Sincerely Robert Bury

curator note:

Dr. Gerd S.:
Did you know that there is a surname tab in Geni that collects surnames? Also a search engine allowing for date ranges of you specification?

Best of luck with your searching. (I'm primarily a Bucks County Quaker, although I do have a few early Delaware Quaker ancestors. I seem to recall that I have Mendenhalls in my tree, but only by marriage.)

In the early years of Pennsylvania Colony, members of Delaware meetings married with those of Bucks and Philadelphia and Chester and Delaware counties. (Montgomery County PA did not exist until later)

My tree has Bailey, Stewart, Bond, Hadley, and many more. My ancestors were dissenters who founded Boston, and moved to the Connecticut River Valley 3 years later as they were being harrassed by Boston Church authorities. Branches of the family later removed to Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and western New York. Here is a link to the Bond Cemetery there for others:

They were involved with native American education and missionary health services very early on, and sent promising students to Dartmouth, and then to return to their tribes. They intermarried with Rhode Island families and a few Philadelphia families later on. They were also involved in the Underground Railroad operations in New York extensively.
