Profiles Mentioned:

There is an alternate possible outcome to the life of the Choctaw man named Hiram King in a man who is recorded living in Mississippi. The final reference to the Choctaw Hiram is by his brother McKee and niece Lucy Bohanan is an affidavit where they state he is deceased, and another by relative Ward Folsom that he is deceased and has left no heirs. No cause of death or burial information has been discovered to confirm these statements. Assuming that the Choctaw Hiram King returned to Mississippi prior to 1840 the man found in Mississippi in 1850 and after could be him Or could simply be a similarly named man of unknown origin.

Perhaps Hiram did leave Indian Territory ca 1837 and return to Mississippi. If he stayed in MS and didn't communicate back to Indian Territory, after time had passed the family in IT would assume he was dead. It is possible that his complexion and features did not give away his heritage and once established in MS he married Rachel and starts a family. At this point it would be advantageous to not associate with being Choctaw so he reports on the census a false birthplace and race.

PROs
Both men born ca 1813
No cause of death or burial information has been discovered to confirm the Choctaw Hiram's death in Indian Territory
His appearance on 1840 Mississippi census seems to coincide with his disappearance from Indian Territory ca 1837
Does not appear on the 1855 tax rolls of Indian Territory
It is known that both men held slaves

CONs
Indian Territory family claims that he died there sometime after 1837 and before 1855, are first-hand sources
The Choctaw Hiram was a signer of the 1830 Treaty which places him in Mississippi, but
On 1850 census and later, birth NOT given as MS, but instead are TN and KY
On 1850 census and later, race given as White, if same man he and his children were at least 1/2 Choctaw and most likely appeared Indian
No evidence the Mississippi family ever claimed Choctaw heritage in searches of all rolls from 1837 - 1907, or applied for any Article 14 benefits of the 1830 Treaty
Missing Documentation
